What You’ll Learn
This isn’t purely a landscape workshop, or purely wildlife. It sits somewhere in between, using the landscapes of Skye as the setting, and the wildlife within them as the moment.
Composition, light, and timing run through everything. Not just how to frame a scene, but how to simplify it, isolating shapes in the landscape, working with negative space, or waiting for a subject to move into position.
When opportunities present themselves, we’ll look at how to track and anticipate wildlife behaviour, capturing movement through panning, freezing action when it happens quickly, or placing wildlife within the landscape to tell a wider story.
We’ll work through how to read the environment as a whole, understanding light, weather, and movement, and how they come together. That might mean long exposures along the coastline, softening water and cloud movement, or working with shifting light across the mountains to create depth and atmosphere.
For those interested, there is also the option to explore video, approaching it in the same way, with an emphasis on observation, pacing, and storytelling.
The aim isn’t just to improve your images, but to change how you approach them
The Itinerary
The workshop typically runs over 5–7 days, allowing time to adapt to the conditions and make the most of each opportunity.
We’ll meet in Glasgow, before travelling together by minibus to Skye, where the focus shifts fully to working with the landscape and the moments within it. From that point on, the structure of each day is shaped by light, weather, and opportunity, rather than a fixed schedule.
The first sessions are about settling into the environment, slowing things down, and beginning to read how conditions are changing. From there, the workshop develops naturally, with early starts and late finishes when needed, balanced with time to rest, review images, and refine your approach.
As the days progress, there’s more space to respond to opportunity, whether that’s shifting light across the landscape or moments of wildlife behaviour. These can’t be planned, but they often become the most memorable parts of the experience.
Time is built in to review images and discuss your work, helping you understand not just what you’ve captured, but how your approach is developing.
The final sessions are shaped around the best available conditions, giving you the chance to apply everything you’ve learned with more independence, while still having support and guidance where needed.
We’ll then travel back to Glasgow together, closing out the workshop with a clearer understanding of how to work with both landscape and wildlife in a more considered way.
What’s Included
Accommodation in a traditional Skye croft, providing a comfortable and immersive base for the duration of the workshop.
Transport from Glasgow to Skye, and throughout the workshop, allowing us to move between locations as conditions change. Return travel to Glasgow is also included.
Guided photography sessions across a range of locations, with a focus on working with light, weather, and opportunity.
Ongoing support and feedback, both in the field and during dedicated review sessions.
Small group sizes to allow for a more personal and flexible approach.
What You’ll Need
A camera, whether you’re just starting out or have more experience.
A range of focal lengths is useful, ideally covering anything from around 14mm through to 400mm, allowing you to work across both landscapes and wildlife. That said, we’ll always work with what you have.
A tripod is recommended, particularly for long exposures and low-light conditions.
Suitable outdoor clothing is essential. Conditions on Skye can change quickly, and being prepared makes a big difference to the experience.
A reasonable level of fitness is required, as some locations may involve short walks over uneven terrain. That said, the approach is flexible and can be adapted to suit the group.
A willingness to slow down, be patient, and work with the conditions.

The Experience
Skye is unpredictable. The light shifts, the weather moves quickly, and no two moments are the same.
Part of what makes it special is the combination of world class landscapes, and the iconic wildlife that moves through them.
This workshop is built around that.
Instead of chasing fixed locations or perfect conditions, we work with what’s there, responding to the landscape as it changes, and to the moments that unfold within it. It’s slower, more considered, and often quieter than people expect. But it’s in those quieter moments that the strongest images tend to come.
The focus isn’t just on taking images, but on understanding when to take them, and just as importantly, when not to. Learning to read light, anticipate change, and stay patient enough for something to happen.
It’s not about leaving with a checklist of locations or species, but with a different way of seeing.
